daytripping: gabriel ba & fabio moon in london

There was a talk by Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba at the South bank yesterday (click on the first image for who are they?). The above 100-days-comic-page is Tom Humberstone’s record of that. It was great, and just as he says, motivating, and with lots to look at (sorry I missed you, Tom). For these guys, there have been no shortcuts, just a lot of hard work, some mistakes and experimentation, much drawing, but also a certain truth and interest in finding stories and finding what stories people might want. To stream Alex Fitch’ podcast with the pair, click on the link below. Casanova (written by Matt Fraction, drawn by Fabio Moon) has already been mentioned on this blog, so you should seek that out tomorrow, when it is available here in the UK, Hooray!

.

Also! Moon and Ba will be painting a wall all day on Friday, at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, in a live  art session. They say they will have their shirts off (girls, take note, get down there, click on the Brazil festival image below for details). Here too is their weekly comic, published in Portuguese and here for your delection, available every week on 10paezinhos. A beautiful thing, stories of life in Brazil, this is something to come back to again, a place to see uniquely personal and resonant storytelling, just as it’s makers would like to see it made.

These two images were snapped at the private view for Arthur Ranson’s exhibition currently at Orbital Comics in London (and there are a couple more on my Tweetphoto page). Apologies for the lack of photo quality. If you can try and see this work then do. I don’t have a photo of the Planet of The Apes from Look-In from 1975 (that is also in the show), but what was so nice was to see the breadth of the work- there was the Muppets and 2000AD, alongside someone getting shot in the head, for example. The website linked to below covers yet more work (and is very informative).

.

Arthur mentioned that he had brought some Dangermouse work (also from Look-In) to Orbital to demonstrate his versatility, but they didn’t use it. He really has nothing to prove. His drawings are as fresh now as they ever were and I am in awe.

(Orbital has a big stack of those lovely black posters for sale, some signed, btw).

100 days, 100 comics – tom humberstone

December 17, 2009

.n

Tom Humberstone is making a page of comics a day, every day for a hundred days. This is publishing’s loss and drawing’s gain as he rests and recoups from the Solipsistic Pop assembly and launch* and gets back to basics. Here’s one of today’s (strangely timeless) pages (above) and a note from page 10 from Tom himself (with page 10, itself below):

Barely a drop in the ocean but still, I’m glad I’ve stuck with this. I think I’m starting to loosen up and have been shocked at how much fun this exercise is. The fact it’s every day takes the pressure off oddly. I go into each comic expecting the worst and have a decent excuse if it turns out badly – but have (most of the time) been pleasantly surprised.

Good Luck and keep going, Tom. 🙂 This is brilliant.

The deadline has just been extended to this very cool competition. Click on the image above to find out more. The first prize: win a very rare copy of Lord Horror, from Savoy’s own files. There are other rare and rather good prizes too. Savoy say:

Lord Horror is to fascism what Hannibal Lecter is to serial killers.”
